Beaujolais Day 2024
Thursday 21st November
The Grand Hotel Swansea Beaujolais Day keeps getting bigger and better every year. Beaujolais Day is one of the biggest celebrations in Swansea.
Beaujolais Nouveau Day – Thursday 21st November
Beaujolais Nouveau is the new wine from the first harvest of grapes in the Beaujolais region of France. At one minute past midnight on the third Thursday of each November, over a million cases of Beaujolais begin their journey across France with a race to get the first bottles to different markets across the globe. Few other wines are produced, bottled and released within a few weeks of the harvest. The wine’s easy drinkability is due to a process called carbonic maceration, or whole berry fermentation, which allows the juice to be extracted from the grapes with a minimum of tannins.
Beaujolais Day is particularly popular in Swansea, where people book tables in restaurants and bars for the day up to a year in advance. Historian Peter Stead argues that its rise in popularity in Swansea can be traced to the city’s No Sign Bar in the 1960s, which was then owned by former Wales rugby union captain Clem Thomas, who owned a house in Burgundy and could transport Beaujolais quickly and cheaply to south Wales.
